Helpful Tips - Locomotive rotating electrical equipment

This week I thought I would do another educational blog concerning a specific maintenance item that can save locomotives an immense amount of cost and down time. Something as simple as using the correct carbon brush grade in your traction motors and generator will reduce the amount of carbon dust buildup associated with locomotive traction motor fires as well as generator fires. Class ! Railroads tend to be very concerned and require their rebuilders to use the latest and greatest high grade brushes on the market. S&S Sales and Leasing has always followed OEM specifications for the recommended carbon brush grade in our rebuilt rotating electrical equipment (i.e.. DB fans, traction motors, generators, companion alternators, auxiliary generators, fuel pump motors, and heater motors). We are always on the lookout for ways to improve reliability with our fleet and our customer's locomotives. We are up grading the carbon brushes being currently used to the highest grade produced by National Carbon Products. Most class 1 railroads now require this high grade, low carbon dust emitting brush to be used in all of their rotating electrical equipment. So when you are in the market for a locomotive/s to purchase (or lease), or locomotive parts, and on-site service to maintain your locomotives in service, please make sure S&S Sales and Leasing is your first call. In addition, if you need any technical help we are always here to assist.
